Something that is rarely discussed.

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

Hey, empathia,

Pretty much. But I think the point is to raise awareness of how development unfolds so people don't feel daunted or freak out at freaking out in the process. My favorite method of meditation practically ensures seemingly negative effects (from facing your ghosts) till they're superseded by an attitude that could be described as an inner Rush. =]

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

Sorry dude I can't get this vid to play on my system. Vimeo either demands that I log in or join.

If anyone knows of a transcript I'd like to read.
Best,

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

This is strange, alex. It demands nothing of me. But you're not missing much - in a nutshell, the video says progress in meditation is nonlinear and sometimes paved with strange reactions, from odd visual hallucinations to emotional outbursts, that often scientists new to the practice don't know about/to expect. It's a word of caution for people who recommend meditation without reserve. The patients who take it up may be unprepared to deal with those consequences.

The author draws his data from buddhist scriptures, which use some strong words to describe negative states experienced by learners, and observations made by Jack Kornfield, the famous meditation instructor, in one of his retreats, IIRC.

Edit: It's also meant to educate therapists who may have to deal with those patients.

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

Hey guys, using firefox browser the screen of the video turn all black and i can't see anything.

It worked for me using internet explorer (maybe something related to flash or some plugin)

Another option is just download the video to the computer, clicking in "download". (128mb mp4 format file)

Cheers

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

I'm using Chrome now, but I remember browsing Vimeo on Firefox without issues.

Different policy for users from the UK? Doubtful, but I have no other explanation for the requirement to join.

Can you download the video, alex?

...Internet Explorer! Our Sherrif had that goddamned bandit run out of town, headed off at the password and arrested for unlawful execution in 2004, the no-good varmint jumped bail and fled across the border on the railroad; ain't been seen in these here parts since then, and good riddance say the decent virus-fearing townsfolk of Hard Drive Ridge*  :  )

I'll try the download.

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

Hi dudes,

I think previous problems were a temporary glitch on their end; today I logged on and watched the whole thing with no problems whatsoever!
It sounds like some of these effects are similar to 'snapback' problems, doesn't it? -although in some cases the diagnosis 'something wrong with them in the first place' is open to interpretation. I mean, from an NH pov, who the heck hasn't got something wrong with them in the first place?  LOL  :  )

It's very relevant for researchers though and thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Best,
AR

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

Hey, dude,

I can't speak for the whole range of weird stuff people experience, but to me they're always inner conflicts that surface when I'm calm enough to see them clearly and not panic, interrupt the meditation, deny them and so forth, as if they're waiting for a sensible resolution. I speculate the difficulty many experience in sitting still to meditate comes from a denial of those conflicts, that they're still too anxious to face. Most people who feel this way never get to know themselves and the source of the discomfort, they just give up when the amorphous nervousness arises. Courage should be encouraged in meditation! =]

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

Hi dude,
...I wonder how large a part lack of sufficient dream time affects meditation responses? Maybe the stuff that comes up as 'unresolved' is in fact just undefragged? I suggest this possibility because when sleep-deprived I experience lots more 'mind-wandering' when meditating, as though random stuff is just 'queueing up' to be defragged.

IBMT looks useful:

Re: Adverse effects of meditation

Yeah, part of it is due to sleep issues I have, meditation working also as a supplement. =] But I have (don't we all?) conflicting feelings about many things, and meditation helps me develop congruence.

Checking your link, thanks.
