Fluid intelligence/IQ/working memory

Hey guys,

I understand that within the context of matrix theory/neurohacking that IQ is not equivalent to intelligence and that there are many aspects which must be developed in the right order. I am currently working on networks 1 and 2, however, I am also reading and planning for my work on the other networks.

At present it does not seem there are many exercises in the tutorials to directly augment the intellect; I imagine that there will be some in future tutorials which deal with N5 and N6. One thing I have found is that my logic/nonverbal reasoning skills are quite below average. While my long-term memory is pretty good and I am quite knowledgeable in general, I really struggle to use my knowledge and deal with novel situations. At times school and university was a great strain for me, and I tend to score below on fluid intelligence tests.

Lately I have been trying to find and read the latest papers on fluid intelligence to find out about its malleability and methods to improve it. I understand that in 2008 Jaeggi, et al. conducted research into working memory training using dual-n-back and its transfer effects to fluid intelligence. The results seemed to be very positive, but later studies and meta-analyses show that it is possibly ineffective at improving Gf. It seems participants get better at the dual-n-back task, but do not get better in general.

I am wondering whether anyone could shed some light on this. I'm very eager to find out what can be done to improve intellect and what the limitations are.

This is important, i don't know what are the results of your FA, but if you don't have a strong or have an unbalance rear network all the abilities that depend of them (all the frontal networks) will suffer to some degree.

For me just improving my attention skills helped a lot on a whole.

Taking in account the above (that working in the rear end should help the front end) is true that there isn't much to work "directly" on N5, probably is something that we get in deep in advanced tutorials (13-18) and yes, probably will take a long time for that =), but i was thinking that maybe could help to the people that worked to have his rear end balanced, create the next volume of hackipedia and incluide N5-N6 exercises/hacks, even when we don't have the tutorials yet? (need to talk with alex that.)

Well the "working memory" stuff, is the mainstream "holy grail" to improve intelligence, you know a lot of paid software and programs come out with that famous first study of Jaeggi.

And yes the results are mixed. I don't know the reason why, but could be a lot of reason, imagine that the people who participate in that study have high level of anxiety hormones, we know how that impair learning, and is not suprise if that is the case the result are going to be bad, or just knowing the importance of having ALL our networks in good shape AND in balance to optimal performance is just a good reason to not be surprised that enhancing only ONE aspect (working memory) of ONE network (N6) will have a transfer in all the domains of intelligence. Maybe the people who are not getting result are inducing more unbalance in his brain?

If mainstream research is looking for a "magic pill" well ... that is not going to happen.

Still i think is a good training .. i did it a few years ago, and i don't know if it increased my working memory "clipboard" but definetly it helped to concentrate better. I will continue to work with it when the time to have more focus on N6 come.

Summary

There is accumulating evidence for improved performance in Gf measures
after targeted cognitive training.
        -> even more evidence for near transfer effects.
The effects have been demonstrated throughout the lifespan - in young
adults, in old adults, in typically developing children, as well as
children with ADHD and other deficits.
Improvements in fluid intelligence seem to rely on improvements in
interference resolution (recognizing and avoiding lures) and

On the upside, you're already improving your intellect by working on N1 and N2. I suspect the problem with studies like Jaeggi et al and the mentality surrounding mainstream intellect development is a sort of reification of the intellect and working memory, as if they were things separated from all the other mental qualities/processes that accompany them, associated with only a few key areas of the brain that can be developed with a simple boring exercise, whereas we need a whole healthy brain/mind to do everything optimally.

When you're ready to tackle N5, you'll be able to devise exercises that give your intellect a nice workout, fun, varied and specialized in the things you care about the most. Strangely, the greatest intellectual boost I had came from being able to face my fears calmly. When I stopped automatically rejecting mental content because I thought it was scary or difficult, my mind became clear and I was able to reason about things I couldn't before, trying different approaches with flexibility and imagination. A lot can be done by removing sentimental blocks (like self-limiting prejudices about one's capabilities), but the golden rule about order still has to be kept in mind for quicker progress. =]

Yeap absolutely, i mean, is hard to extrapolate the "attention/concentration" component because is present in almost everything we do. That's one of the reason i like meditation, because is a way i can train my attention skills in a "pure form" (if that makes sense?).

Btw do you have experience with binaural beats in meditation? (alpha frequency).

Some people says it helps to progress faster especially with neurofeedback devices.

Yeah. This is personal, of course, but I can't find many redeeming qualities in working memory training as proposed in that study. I'd rather grab a musical instrument and have fun for that.

Binaural beats (Theta range) have been useful to me. =]

That's correct, for two reasons: (a)always do things in the right order and (b)by the time we get to working on front nets there's a lot less to do, as many problems have already been solved by working on previous nets.

'quite knowledgeable' is a bit vague... it's apparent from research that there are differing types of 'knowledge'; knowing how to swim is not at all the same as knowing what is the capital of australia, knowing how to change a tire, knowing how to resolve conflict, knowing how to deal with anxiety, knowing how to change our own chemistry, or knowing how to use a word processing application. There is knowledge as experience as well as knowledge of information; and the latter rests its concepts on the former.

What they all do have in common is at some stage they need practice, but to leap straight in to practice without the tools for the task is not the answer -we must ensure that we have the tools to do the task -and practice using those tools- before practicing the task.

The best methods in existence won't change anything if we do things in the wrong order -practice must come before variation and after modeling, modeling must come after concentration and observation are honed to sufficient sensitivity, nothing can be done at all with high anxiety chemistry present so that has to be removed first, and so on.

Developing any aspect of intelligence in the wrong order will result in specialized ability in one area coupled with lack or loss of ability in other areas. Only doing things in the right order enables us to develop the whole brain to full potential without losing any skills.

Strong intellect rests on strong creative reasoning and strong flexible logic, which in turn rely on strong memory and strong imagination...which in turn rely on lower network skills. There really isn't any getting away from doing things in the right order if we want full potential. Meta process has summed this up nicely in their post; whole brain excellence emerges from following an algorithm -an ordered procedure of steps that accomplishes a particular goal -intelligence emergence.

Something else I'm wondering about is this:

What should someone do if their everyday activities (job, university, etc) demand that they develop higher network abilities ASAP (for instance, memory) when they've not yet fully developed N1 and N2? Is there a way to go about this without encountering the difficulties as a result of not doing things in the right order?

This happens to most of us at school, a major intelligence-retarder. There are two ways forward:

1 Try to get into a more enriched environment (ie, one that suits our current network needs) asap. This may involve a change of career, moving to a new area, ending or beginning relationships, developing strategies for changing the situation (for example part-time doing one thing and part-time doing another, instead of all the same thing.)

2 Practice using the networks we need to develop more than the ones that are overdeveloped, -for example, someone who is pushed into using N5 during the day could be doing N1-N2 stuff in the evenings and at night. Keeping anxiety low always reduces damage.

Our background ontology determines our approach. If we disembody the initial question with discourse analysis we see that “every day activities” are not a person and so not able to 'demand' anything.  :  )

“Everyday activities” are just tasks. We have free will to choose what tasks we do, so hack the problem at root: Who exactly is doing the demanding here? It's gonna be either somebody else coercing us into doing inappropriate stuff, or ourselves demanding we do inappropriate stuff. Maybe we believe we should do this stuff out of fear of what others will think if we don't, maybe we got dragged into it earlier by others and now find it hard to see a way out. Rest assured that's an illusion -it is up to us to choose what activities we do each and every day, from our own free will with no coercion.

The answer is no. As long as we are doing things in the wrong order we're slowing down intelligence.
If we take a decision to do that deliberately at any point, (for example if our immediate wellbeing is in danger if we refuse) that's our decision, but we should take it with open eyes and without any guilt in full awareness of what we're doing, and try to employ the tactics 1 & 2 above.

I think I have a clearer understanding of things now. Am I right in thinking that the "do things in the correct order" rule does not necessarily imply we should totally abandon activities involving higher network activities? In other words, just because someone has not yet developed N1 and N2, it does not mean they should give up activities involving other networks, so long as those activities do not predominate over others which develop the networks which need to be developed first. Is this the correct understanding?

Hi dude,
As far as we can tell any nonuse is damaging, so I would expect healthy use of all networks on a regular basis would be part of almost all NH plans. If a particular network was getting burnout I guess the owner would consider giving it a total rest, but only for a short time -it would be healthier to slowly reduce the use or shift it to a healthier focus.

Imagine being forced to constantly exercise only one limb, until that limb gets muscle network tearing and joint deterioration...that's a similar situation in a physical context-we'd rest up until deterioration stopped and then gently exercise whilst healing, and we'd start developing the other limbs right away.

Likewise if there's a lot of wronguse and the risk of burnout we might take a break from using that network, but for most people that's not gonna be the case.
